Big Sur - Old Coast Road
Tours available for groups of 4 - 10
Cycle with us into the heart of Big Sur pedaling the venerable Old Coast Road. Long before Highway 1 traversed the edge of the Big Sur Coastline, the Old Coast Road was a trail used by indigenous Native Americans. In 1855, it became a public road for landowners and settlers to travel up and down the Big Sur Coast by horse and wagon. Today, our tour provides a spectacular opportunity to revisit this route while experiencing the Big Sur landscape as only a few cyclists do.
This rugged dirt road, perfect for exploring by electric mountain bike, climbs over high peaks and drops to the valley floor amongst the majestic Redwood trees along the Little Sur River. We begin at the South end of Old Coast Road at Andrew Molera State Park and travel 10 miles North on the to the iconic Bixby Bridge where we will enjoy photos and a picnic lunch.
After a well-earned rest, we loop back South on Highway 1 enjoying spectacular views of the rugged Big Sur Coastline along the way. The Old Coast Road is a vigorous ride, guests should have a good level of fitness and a spirit for adventure.
Round trip tour distance: 19 miles - Elevation gain: 2,825 feet
Following the tour, take a short drive South to the town of Big Sur and enjoy one of the local restaurants, art galleries and the historic Henry Miller Library.
